Neo Genesis Evangelion isn't so much a TV series as a mind rape you subject yourself to for several hours on end. You scream at it. You hate it for what it's done to you. You hate it for what it's done to Japanese children. You really want to hug them.

Here's the premise. Fighting robots. But it's not just about fighting robots. The robots are also a metaphor for you. And for humans. And for everything. They're also a metaphor for war. And inside these fighting robots are people. People who are a metaphor for you. For humans. For gender. For God. For children. For your father. For your mother.

Really, I could say 1,000 things here, but there is no real coherent way to explain this. The show gives you images, and voices, and musical associations, and then subtly swaps them around and changes things to fuck with you. Until you go, in one episode, from seeing through the eyes of a boy, to seeing through the eyes of a girl. But they're the same person. The shift is gradual. And then you kill yourself. And then your daughter rejects you.

God damn it show! You're doing it again? Why are you showing me these fucked up things show?!

What is crafted here is a giant metaphor for existence and, in one interpretation, a slow dance of the Japanese to the forced Christianity brought by Western interaction and atomic bombs. In one interpretation.

It makes you question everything. You are everything. You identify with certain things. Who are you? Which character are you? Are you all of them? Yes. No. God damn it show!

In short, this is the best and worst giant robot anime show ever.
