It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do for my blog on this site, but I finally decided that what I really wanted was to share all the fucked up things I read on the Internet, movies, video games, books, whatever. And by fucked up, I generally hope I mean interesting. At least I find them interesting.
Today, I ran across this article about Dmitri Mendeleev a Russian chemist who outlined Periodic Law and ordered the original Periodic Table of the Elements. Dude wanted to see a solar eclipse so bad, as outlined in the piece, he risked life and limb to see it. Later in his life, he quit his post at a Russian university and the authorities were so afraid he might cause a revolt, they sent armed guards to his last lecture.
Mendeleev, who was married at the time, also threatened suicide while courting a girl, divorced his wife and then married this girl soon after. The Russian Orthodox church required seven years after a divorce before followers were allowed to remarry, so Mendeleev was labeled a bigamist and was not allowed into the Russian Academy of Sciences (at least, according to Wikipedia), despite outlining the Periodic Table.

Re:Fucked up people: Dmitri Mendeleev
Aug 25 2009 07:48:48 That is fucked up. He was also into ballooning, which just reminded me of Ballooner Landing.
In this case I think he's remembered for his achievement more than his personal business. He's the Roman Polanski of the science world! Ha, it takes North Americans about 7 years to get a good credit rating back, I wonder if there's a reason for 7? |
