Greenlaw at Sal'sPosted by M.D. Shorter in show review , sal's on 17th , greenlaw , dubstep , drum and bass , astral harvest |
I had done some Youtube browsing to find out a bit about Greenlaw when I heard they were coming to town to play at Sal’s on 17th through Sal’s Facebook group. The idea of a live dubstep/drum and bass/funk group sounded like a cool concept and Greenlaw didn’t disappoint when they hit the stage Wednesday.
The band is a two-piece comprised of singer Skyla J and MC Ozzie. Skyla sings dreamily over top of the back beats, occasionally busting out a flute for some jazzy riffs, while Ozzie switches between rapping urgently and with a laid back, chilled nature. Though the majority of the YouTube work I listened to beforehand was fairly down tempo, Greenlaw can rock the dancy beats as well, which kept the packed dance floor happy. Sadly because the mic cords weren’t long enough, Skyla J and Ozzie couldn’t jump in with the crowd, but they kept everyone entertained from their pulpit.
