** This thread discusses the content article: A Marc of things to come **

Today is Day 1 for controversial pot activist Marc Emery, who gave himself up to Canadian officials Sept. 28. Emery is to be extradited to the US where he could spend up to five years in a Seattle prison for selling marijuana seeds to US customers.

There are varying opinions on Emery, what he represents and how Canadian authorities have handled the situation.

Here is an opinion piece saying the ordeal "mocks our independence."

Here is another one saying "his punishment should surprise no one."

Let these two opposing articles be your starting point. READ, RESEARCH, ACT!

Be sure to check out Hotbox's in-depth interview with Marc during his farewell tour stop this past summer.

I agree with the first article whole-heartedly. I have never met Marc so my judgments on his character are somewhat superficial and unwarranted. He does seem to have a certain quirkyness to him that make people second guess his motives. Sometimes it's hard to decipher between celebrity and activist. But I think, in the end, Marc has done so much for the pot community the minor flaws pale in comparison.
What really pisses me off is Canada's pussy-footing around the legalization issue. This seems like a huge step back, not only for the pot movement, but like the first article said, Canadian sovereignty in general.
It shows that the US government can bully anybody they don't like (Tommy Chong) and get away with it.
Fuck, Canada, you're stronger than that, you play hockey for Christ's sake.

Some important questions are brought to mind like, what happens to the legalization movement now? Will it get stronger as people who were on the fence before are now pissed off enough to get active, or will some people pack it up and admit defeat?
Ha, I kind of laughed as I was typing the last part of the last sentence. Not bloody likely!
Who, if anybody, will take his place?
Does the movement need a single hero? Or is it better off with a communal presence?

What are your thoughts?
