Whether you’re an indie-nerd, mashup enthusiast, break-beat banger, or just a regular ol’ perverted audiophile, you undoubtedly spend money on music. Back in my day we used to have to put on pants, go outside and head to the local record store to buy these space-aged looking coasters called Compact Discs. Now, I know what you’re thinking, what good is a compact disc if it just sits on a shelf and collects dust. How can music grow and evol v e if only one per son, m ainly the owner, is hearing that CD? Well, you’re right, it probably can’t. That’s why in this new Hotbox feature we will present to you a weekly free download from the Internets. From what I’ve been told, these internets are a great way of spreading new and exciting music at the frenetic frequency CD’s could only dream of. In out first installment we deliver to Jaydiohead, the art rock mega drone instrumentation of Radiohead, cleverly overlaid with the lyrics of Jay Z’s 2003 smash The Black Album. Minty Fresh Beats (Max Tannone), the New York based DJ who produced the album, has seemingly blended two genres of music that had little do with each other in the past. With tracks like “No Karma” or “99 Anthems” one can’t help but listen in awe at how obvious it all seems. Jay Z also digs at least some of the tunes, he recently posted the tweet: “There are 3 or 4 REAL gems on jaydiohead..” His decision to release an a cappella version of The Black Album as encouragement for DJ use paid off for him and Minty Fresh Beats. The mashup’s sphere of influence perhaps receive a little boost too, as the skeptics who are still not sold on this whole mashup thing might change their minds, if not get them blown.
