With a number of summer festivals just gearing up, the Drayton Valley-area Motion Notion festival provides an explosive introduction to what is sure to be an enormously memorable season. It is also an incredibly attractive early-season alternative to the Nelson-area Shambhala festival, with driving times clocking in at just over three and a half hours from Calgary, or an hour from Edmonton. An impressive line-up of Internationally-renowned artists includes critically-acclaimed experimental breakbeat producer Amon Tobin, UK psytrance artist John ‘00’ Fleming, dubstep legend Excision, Calgary’s own Small Town DJs, and many more. The uniquely-Albertan festival is a visual oasis created by Katalyst Events’ James Katalyst. Edmonton’s GOMP (Grumpy Old Man Productions) group also provides some visual pinache to keep you trippin’ while Calgary’s PK sound and lighting (See our review of their recent Dieselboy show) brings the noise necessary to keep the beats thumping around your skull. Wrong Electron’s “interactive zone” allows festival-goers the ability to visually interact with the music being played, while untold numbers of other sensory delights are sure to keep the weekend interesting. The full lineup can be found on the festival’s website and is worth checking out if only to see how much music they can cram into the four day event. If you’re into experimental breakbeats, however, Motion Notion is the must-attend musical event of the summer because of one man: Amon Tobin. The Brazilian breakbeat producer is one of the fastest growing stars on the international scene, with work ranging from extremely dark and atmospheric soundscapes like 2007’s Foley Room, to the danceable breakbeat tracks on 2002’s Out From Out Where. Tobin will be playing a live PA set on Friday night at the Main Stage.
If psytrance is more your thing, you can’t beat DJ John ‘00’ Fleming, who’s playing the Main Stage Saturday night. Fleming’s booming and dark take on trance has been packing floors in Britain and is simultaneously the kind of music that will have you pumping your fist in the air, tripping balls, dancing like a fool and looking for aliens, though maybe not in that order. It’s not quite Goa, nor is it death trance or psytekk. If you’re not experiencing divine union with some sexy interplanetary travelers by the end, psy fans can also hear the dark technical sound of Yugoslavia’s Species as he does a live PA late Saturday night, and another psytrance live PA by Mexico’s Blue Lunar Monkey (Saturday afternoon, early Sunday morning).
![]() Other notable headliners include the dirty electro of the UK’s Will Bailey and the downtempo beats of Adham Shaikh. The various Alberta electronic music scenes are well-represented, with Smalltown DJs, Psy Amigos, Sons of Aurora, Jay Michael, Trevor Galore and more stirring up trouble from the city better known for week-long hee-haw fests than breakbeats, and the likes of Kristoff, Fuuze, Degree, Groovy Cuvy and many of the Y-Afterhours regulars driving the short hop, skip and jump from Edmonton.
Being mentally and physically prepared is just as important as bringing proper footwear. As we prepare our in-depth summer festival coverage, look forward to content designed to prepare you as well — survival guides, must-see event lists, interviews and helpful tips — so that you too may have a fun, safe and meaningful festival experience.

Jul 09 2009 05:40:04 WOO! Amon Tobin will be nuts if your into that sort of thing! The Foley Room has echoes of Jon Oswald and his Plunderphonic album (although Tobin used all original sounds) Maybe a bit of Herbert's Scale album, too.
A psy-trance fans' wet dream this year. |
