The sky was electric with chemical lighting and beats heavier than concrete rain as B.C. dubstep producer Excision brought the noise Sat., July 18 at the Motion Notion 2009 music festival.

Shortly following the epic bass maelstrom produced by renowned Brazilian artist Amon Tobin, the skies continued to darken and MoNo’s colourful festivalgoers began the journey deep into the forest. As the Woods stage filled, the anticipation was so thick you could deep-fry it — for we all know: tonight, there shall be bass.

Out of nowhere, Excision started dropping beats like anvils on coyotes. Summoning a giant blue hadoken radiating with nuclear potential high above the dance floor, the resulting crater only sought to reinforce the notion that this is some heavy shit. Caught in the energy of the moment, the dumbfounded audience’s only recourse was to continue the work of the heavy machinery and dig a hole so deep and so dark that Lucifer himself would reminisce about his fiddlin’ days when the filthy beats started shaking the very foundations of Hell itself.

From the darkest reaches of the chasm, a flock of incubi thought to prey upon bystanders innocently throwing down in the chaos. Up they flew, the flapping of their wings becoming more and more horrifying as their dark shapes approached. However, their endeavour was ill-timed as a combination of astral alignment and the explosion of a gritty saw that must have registered on the Richter scale resulted in their complete disintegration before even reaching the mantel layer.

Yet shortly thereafter, the set ended and our valiant defender was whisked away by who-knows-what into the nether reaches of the forest. Not wishing to anger the occupants of the underworld any further, my photographer and I made our way to the mainstage because everyone knows that the hoardes of hell really fucking hate Psytrance.

That night was certainly mythical!

I do recall the power (not just sound, but the lighting et al.) being ripped away from us at two different points during his set. It was weird, everyone was in "What do we do now" mode, looking at each other confused as hell. The power outage was an unforeseen addition to the story, which makes it even better.

Great review.
